We reframe Shakespeare not as a gatekeeper, but as a gateway: a tool our students can own, reshape, and speak through.

Who We Are
Trinity Theatre Group is a social impact organization dedicated to empowering 3rd–8th grade students in economically disadvantaged NYC communities through the transformational power of theatre.
Through our afterschool program, Trinity Players, we leverage the transformative power of theatre, with a focus on Shakespeare, to elevate literacy, enhance social-emotional development, and cultivate community.
Why Shakespeare?
At Trinity Theatre Group, we use Shakespeare in ways that empower rather than alienate. Too often, Black and Brown students are taught to approach Shakespeare with caution—as if his work is above them, or worse, not meant for them. We reject that.
Grappling with Shakespeare’s themes—love, betrayal, power, loss—gives our students language for their own emotions. They learn to name what they feel, reflect on who they are, and imagine who they want to be. The plays become mirrors, helping students process anger, joy, grief, and hope—often for the first time in a safe, supported space.
At the same time, Shakespeare’s language demands and develops literacy. Students strengthen reading comprehension by unpacking complex metaphors. They expand their vocabulary, learn rhetorical devices, and sharpen writing skills as they adapt scenes and craft their own interpretations. Most importantly, they discover that literacy isn’t just about reading—it’s about making meaning, claiming voice, and telling their story.
In Trinity Players, students don’t just decode the text, they transform it. They see that they can be powerful, poetic, complicated, and seen—not in spite of who they are, but because of it.
Shakespeare becomes theirs.
Not a relic to revere, but a resource to reclaim.
Not just for literacy—but for healing, connection, and growth.
